Testing-it offers customers the opportunity to use formal test management tools without the usual high start-up costs. Specifically, the test tool currently provided on-demand is: Mercury Quality Centre (for Test Director) with Dashboard, since this is an excellent industry-standard test management tool set.
The customer cost savings are made by shifting the responsibilities onto Testing-it to provide the test server infrastructure, operating system, database, and test tool licences. Testing-it will administer the system and provide assistance with scripting, reporting, and defect management as required.
‘On-demand’ means customers only pay for access to remotely hosted web-based test tools when they are wanted, and for the number of concurrent client connections demanded by the customer during that period. There are no test tool overhead costs for customers prior to, or following active use.
How it works:
- Server configuration, availability, and maintenance are the responsibility of Testing-it.
- Oracle Database Administration and backups are the responsibility of Testing-it.
- Security patches and Firewall configuration for the Test Tool are the responsibility of Testing-it.
- Test-Tool Site Administration, configuration and customisation is the responsibility of Testing-it.
- Testing-it will customise Quality Centre projects and create bespoke progress reports, if asked.
- Testing-it will provide assistance with test planning, scripting, execution and defect tracking, if asked.
- Testing-it can import the customers existing test scripts into Quality Centre for enhancement.
- Testing-it can provide on-the-job mentoring, to save the customer sending staff on training courses.
The benefits of adopting the Testing-it on-demand test management service are:
- Significantly reduced cost of adopting formal test tools;
- No need for in-house infrastructure or support;
- Rapid deployment of a pre-configured system;
- Greatly reduced risk of encountering test tool implementation and support problems;
- An ideal route for making the transition to formal testing;
- Flexible user numbers, without the customer committing to buying permanent licences;
- Professional guidance in choosing the best approach to using test tools, and gaining exposure to the process of testing best-practice;
- No need for the customer to have available, trained resources;
- Mentoring provides a real-world knowledge transfer to the customer;
- The customer gains test tool experience without making a large investment commitment;
- Projects can be archived for re-use at any date in the future without maintaining a test tool system in the meantime.
The costs are based upon how many concurrent users the customer wishes to have access to the tool, the amount of time spent using the tools, and how many modifications are required to meet the customer needs. As a guideline, a year of using Testing-it on-demand tools will probably cost approximately 50% less than a customer running the same system in-house.
